A Multi-Study Examination of Family Process and Health Phenomena

Abstract Details

, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Human Ecology: Human Development and Family Science.
This purpose of this dissertation project is to examine health processes among couples and individuals in the context of Bowen Family Systems Theory. The first study examines the relationships between family history of diabetes or heart disease and current levels of health in couple members. The family relational construct of differentiation of self is tested as mediator and moderator in this study. Implications of the findings are discussed from the lens of Bowen Family Systems Theory. The second study examines the factor-structure of the newly developed Differentiation of Self Inventory—Short Form (DSI-SF; Drake et al., 2015), and whether its four-factor structure demonstrates validity of scores with a sample of Black adults. This study also examines the convergent and discriminant validity of the DSI-SF scores (Drake et al., 2015) by testing its association with a family functioning variable. The third study, utilizing the DSI-SF (Drake et al., 2015), examines whether the stressor of perceived racism predicts hypertension status with a sample of Black adults and if levels of differentiation influence this association. This study also examines whether the differentiation construct predicts hypertension treatment adherence. Findings are discussed in the context of Bowen Family Systems Theory.
