The Curing of Sentiments: History, Narrative, and Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy

Smith, David M.

Abstract Details

2011, Bachelor of Arts (BA), Ohio University, English.
This thesis explores the role of narrative in Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy, especially as narrative meaning begins to replace the viability of existential meaning throughout the course of the trilogy. The two protagonists, John Grady Cole and Billy Parham, represent these different forces, and the contrast of how they deal with their own tragedies reflects the importance of making human life, replete with joys and sorrows, into meaningful narratives.
