Education and the Cumulative Benefits of Capital on Patient Satisfaction with Hospitals

Stephens, Abigail C

Abstract Details

2017, Bachelor of Arts (BA), Ohio University, Sociology.
Recent political debates over American health care, particularly the defunding of the Affordable Care Act, highlight just how deeply the United States struggles to achieve an equitable, accessible and affordable health care system. A great deal of scholarship focuses on health care outcomes, but little research examines the hospital experience itself. This knowledge gap ignores an important component of the health care process, because every patient experiences the health care process differently; namely due to the differential social luggage each patient brings to their experience. My research examines how different amounts of social and human capital—conferred through education—affect the hospitalization experiences of patients, as gauged by patient satisfaction surveys. I focus on the Appalachian region, an area of the United States which struggles with lower rates of education achievement via high school graduation (as compared to the national average).
