Money Talks…and Votes? How Campaign Finances Influence Senatorial Votes in the 116th Congress

Abstract Details

2022, Bachelor of Science (BS), Ohio University, Journalism.
This project analyzes the impact that grassroots campaign contributions have on senatorial votes in the United States. It explores what issues are particularly important to residents of 25 randomly selected states, along with voting records of the two co-senators that represent each state. Then, campaign contributions are compared to those voting records to determine if candidates vote less often based on dollars received per capita. The main hypothesis addressed is that senators who received more money from grassroots level donors were more likely to vote on issues deemed to be "important" by their constituents. In sum, this thesis explores the ways in which campaign contributions influence how often senators vote.
