Mechanical Engineering Students’ Perceptions of Employment Threat and Its Relation to Immigration

The black sheep effect (Marques, Yzerbyt, & Leyens, 1988; Marques, 1990; Pinto, Marques, Levine, & Abrams, 2010) has demonstrated ingroup extremity in evaluation through various methodologies across a wide range of domains. The model was based primarily on the social identity and self-categorization theories (Hogg, 2000; Tajfel, 1981). The current study reviewed the underlying theories (e.g., group norms) of the black sheep effect. Through manipulating the salience of foreign competition and target group membership, the study anticipated to find ingroup favoritism, but the results of the study did not show ingroup favoritism. When including fluency as the (un)favorable trait, the study found evidence of the black sheep effect. Specifically, the engineering students evaluated a fluent speaking American candidate more favorably compared to a similar foreign candidate in the threat salient conditions, and a non-fluent American candidate was evaluated more harshly relative to a similar foreign candidate. Whereas for the no threat conditions, the engineering students evaluated the fluent speaking candidates more favorably across board regardless group membership. This did not support the ingroup favoritism assumption. Since these results were only found in the indirect measure (and not in the direct measure), additional research in this domain is needed.
