Abstract
Tuition discounting has been a long standing practice among private colleges and universities. The scholarly research devoted to this topic over the past forty or more years has been very limited especially on the impact of discounting tuition on the finances and net revenue of the institution. This study traced trends in total student enrollment, minority student enrollment, low-income student enrollment, net tuition revenue, tuition and fees, institutional discounting, including funded and unfunded institutional aid, selectivity, and SAT scores; examined the existing relationships between net tuition revenue and institutional factors such as institutional discount rate, funded tuition discount rate, unfunded tuition discount rate, enrollment of low-income students, minority student enrollment, and selectivity; and probed into whether tuition revenue could be determined by one or a combination of institutional factors including net tuition revenue, funded tuition discount rate, unfunded tuition discount rate, enrollment of low-income students, minority student enrollment, and selectivity at the 121 private, not-for-profit, liberal arts institutions in the United States. This research study did show that a strong, negative relationship existed between the funded and unfunded institutional tuition discount rate and net tuition revenue.
