The Feasibility of Applying an Industrial Hygiene Sampling Method to Measure Airborne Microcystin

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Science in Occupational Health, University of Toledo, Occupational Health (Industrial Hygiene).
Airborne microcystin toxin has the potential to impact recreational and commercial users of cyanobacteria harmful algal bloom (cHAB) impacted lakes. One result of a cHAB can be the presence of toxic, microcystin in the water and air. In water, the toxin is often quantified using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), however a standardized method for quantifying airborne microcystin does not exist. This study has identified a potential method for collecting and quantifying microcystin in the air using an industrial hygiene (IH) sampling method. There is also no standard method for quantifying microcystin on filter media, so a laboratory method was required to be developed. Known concentrations of microcystin standard were spiked onto filter media and a method for removing the toxin by vacuum suction in the laboratory was developed. An IH sampling method was applied to aerosolized microcystin in a laboratory chamber and the extraction procedure performed on the filters to verify detection. The IH sampling method was then performed at two sampling events in the field at a known cHAB impacted lake and the samplers were positioned on a recreational boat to maximize detection. The laboratory work was necessary to provide confidence to the field results where 0.04 to 0.21 ng of microcystin were detected after sampling times ranging from 30 to 240 minutes. Airborne microcystin was detected on all filters from the field and further research into the area of airborne exposure to microcystin is needed.
