Performance Evaluation of M-ary APSK using Punctured Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) for DVB Applications

This work is on the performance evaluation of TCM M-ary APSK (Amplitude Phase Shift Keying) for the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) applications. The DVB standard currently uses BCH for outer coding and LDPC for inner coding as the FEC (Forward Error Correction) encoding scheme combined with BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK and M-APSK (M = 8 to 256). However, these complicated concatenated processes can be replaced by TCM (Trellis Coded Modulation) which not only avoids the use of two different layers of encoding but also combines the encoding and the modulation scheme into a single task for better efficiency. In addition, by introducing puncturing technique in TCM, the basic rate 1/2 encoder can be used to produce any higher rate codes, which supports the idea of Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) in new DVB standards. Since puncturing the codes effectively reduces the parallel paths in higher modulation schemes, the performance gain is drastically improved. The BER (Bit Error Rate) performance based on the extensive computer simulations and the analytical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.
