An Investigation of the Influence of Being a Resident Assistant on College Students’ Spiritual Growth and Development

Abstract Details

2018, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Toledo, Higher Education.
A qualitative research approach was used to understand how students experience spiritual growth and development through their extra-curricular involvements. The investigation viewed this question through the lens of the lived experiences of Resident Assistants who serve as peer mentors, resources, programmers, and first responders in the residence halls on campuses. What was revealed through their interviews was that the reasons why students apply to be involved in leadership positions have spiritual intentions. Subsequently, in carrying out their roles, they experience opportunities to grow in spiritual areas like equanimity, care for others, and worldview. They also seek ways to develop purpose and meaning through their involvement. Unfortunately, what the participants indicated was missing was consistent, meaningful conversations with supervisors that allowed them to adequately reflect on their experiences.
