STORIES OF MAKING: LESSONS FOR UNDERSTANDING DWELLING

HUNG, LI-TING

Abstract Details

2002, MS ARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning : Architecture.
This study looks at Ann Cline’s hut dwelling experience, Richard Brittain’s experiment in assive dwelling with the desert, the inspirational ceramic architectural dwellings of Charles Simonds, and the researcher's own personal account of ceramic making and dwelling experience; all to shine light toward a clearer understanding of the act of making and dwelling. Through the lives of these four makers, this study explores the common ground that links different pathways of making and dwelling. Their art, and their interpretation of what it means to create a living space upon the earth, is revealed in the dwellings they created. Through their hands we see alternative ways to view a space in time, and to create an atmosphere for human dwelling that reflects the natural, physical world from which all our ancestors’ shelters once emerged.
