Abstract
Manufacturing cost optimization is a major concern in todays manufacturing industries. Previous reported work has concentrated on tolerance synthesis and process selection at the design level. Scheduling of processes is the next logical step once process selection and proper tolerance selection are complete. This work provides an algorithm that integrates job scheduling and process planning in a job shop-manufacturing environment. The input to the algorithm consists of: 1. Multiple process plans generated by the algorithm designed by Sangeet Uttam in the thesis titled "Optimal Tolerance Synthesis for Process Planning with Machine Selection " , 2. [21], 3. Job precedence relationship of all the jobs, 4. Demand for each part type, 5. Available batch sizes, 6. Due date of the demand for each part type, and 7. Set up time on each machine The algorithm presented in this thesis establishes the following: 1. Optimal (or near optimal ) Process Planning, 2. Optimal schedule of jobs on each machine, 3. Tardiness Cost and Minimum Manufacturing cost, and 4. Batch sizing of the demand of each part type The designed algorithm provides a solution to the problem of minimizing the sum total of scheduling cost and manufacturing by establishing the optimal process plan and optimal schedule of jobs in the given manufacturing scenario. This software tool has been tested over a large dimension problem and has been found to converge on an optimal or near optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time. The Genetic Algorithm Tool Box in MATLAB has been used in implementing the designed job - scheduling algorithm.
