Professionals such as speech pathologists are just beginning to understand the implications of assessing quality of life in head and neck cancer patients. In the current study, head and neck cancer patients previously and/or currently receiving swallowing therapy were asked to complete a quality of life questionnaire. Clinical characteristics of each subject were obtained from medical chart reviews and summarized using descriptive statistics. Exhaustive summary statistics were computed to identify patterns in the subjects’ response and to examine relationships between physical and functional status and quality of life. In the present study, the most consistent factors in the subjects’ self-ratings of quality of life were that swallowing takes great effort, it takes longer to eat due to swallowing problems, and that subjects limit their food intake because of their swallowing problems. Subjects also reported limitations on social and personal lives and not feeling free to go out to eat with others. The ability to increase the vertical opening of the jaw and to tolerate swallowing exercises related to higher quality of life scores.
