Attitudes Toward and Experience with Adolescent Genetic Testing for Carrier Status

Multhaupt, Trisha J.

Abstract Details

2004, MS, University of Cincinnati, Allied Health Sciences : Genetic Counseling.
The purpose of this retrospective study was to characterize current practices and attitudes regarding testing adolescents for carrier status. An electronic survey was sent to 289 genetic service providers from various professional organizations. Overall, 83% of practitioners have received requests to test adolescents for carrier status. 84% of these providers have performed testing. Providers cite adolescent desire, sexual activity/pregnancy and adolescent competence as main reasons for testing. Some providers who performed testing found the current guideline unhelpful. This study indicates that testing adolescents for carrier status is common. The position statement on genetic testing of adolescents may need updating to reflect current concerns and practices.
