Abstract Details

2005, MEd, University of Cincinnati, Education : Health Promotion and Education.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether sexually active university students’ perceived level of physical sexual satisfaction differed based on exercise status and body mass index. In addition, this study investigated whether the possible effect of exercise on perceived physical sexual satisfaction differed based on gender and body mass index. The participants of this study consisted of a convenience sample of students attending the University of Cincinnati during the Spring Quarter of 2005. The sample size was 678. All part-time and full-time students were surveyed. A two page, 35-item survey instrument was developed for this study (AppendixA). This instrument consisted of two subscales and a demographic segment. Subscale one assessed an individual’s physical sexual satisfaction and required participants to indicate how satisfied or dissatisfied with each of the 18 items by using a five-point Likert-type scale (1 = strongly dissatisfied, 5 = strongly satisfied). Subscale two was developed to measure individuals’ perceptions on the effects of exercise on physical sexual satisfaction and required participants to indicate how strongly they agreed or disagreed with each of the 12 items by using a five-point Likert-type scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree).Permission to distribute the surveys was received from the instructors of eight Undergraduate level classes, a total of 17 classes. Arrangements were made with each individual instructor for convenient class days and time for the students to complete the survey. Results showed that students perceived body image, sexual desirability perception, and physical strength were the top three components of physical sexual satisfaction impacted by exercise. The lowest components of physical sexual satisfaction impacted by exercise were orgasm frequency, orgasm intensity, and frequency. It was therefore concluded that college students’ participation in regular exercise had an effect on physical sexual satisfaction (p=.030). Furthermore, it was concluded that college students’ body mass index had a relationship with physical sexual satisfaction (p=.019), the gender of college students had an effect on physical sexual satisfaction (p<.001), and that gender had a significant effect on perceived impact of exercise on physical sexual satisfaction (p=.001). Since physical activity may increase physical sexual satisfaction, health professionals could use the results of the current study to help motivate individuals to begin an exercise program or to exercise more.
