Abstract
Contact problems have great importance in the field of mechanical design, due to their impact on machine performance and efficiency. Industrial applications of the contact problems include power transmitting gears, splines, sliding contact bearings and rolling contact bearings. Due to the wide range of usage in industry, contact mechanics research became an important and active field. This research project involves a finite element analysis technique to solve the 3-D contact problems. It is difficult to develop the analytical solution to 3-D contact problems due to complicated geometries involved, and thus numerical approaches must be used. This research project develops the 3-D finite element contact model with dissimilar materials having frictional contact. Both normal and tangential loads are acting on the system. The goal of this project is to calculate variations in stick zone and slip zone sizes within the contact area with varying tangential load and constant normal load. The results that come from this project are very much useful in design of contacting parts in industry. We can further use these results for future research in this field. This current research project is the continuation of former PhD student’s (Junshan Li [6]) research work. He found the variations in the stick zone and slip zone sizes within the contact area using an incremental solution. Finite element solution results in this project showed that stick zone size increases in the initial steps of tangential load, reduces and moves in the direction of tangential load in later load steps and these results are in agreement with Muniswamy’s [24] numerical results.
