EXPLORING A MORAL WORLD: MORAL ISSUES AND INFLUENCES IN THE LIVES OF LOW-INCOME AFRICAN AMERICAN YOUTH IN THE UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM

Abstract Details

2006, MA, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences : Sociology.
The moral lives of low-income African American youth participating in the Upward Bound program are explored. By meeting the program’s requirement of maintaining high grades and a good behavioral record, the youth belie the negative stereotypical image of youth from their socioeconomic and ethnic background. In semi-structured interviews the participants talked about their most significant moral dilemmas. Using the languages of justice and care, as derived in Kohlberg’s (1969) justice theory of moral development and Gilligan’s (1982) ethic of care theory I identified the moral elements in their narrations. Applying Blasi’s (1983) ‘self-model’ theory over half the participants were found to have established a moral identity characterized by ‘resistance’ to behavior that made them like the negative stereotype of youth from their background. Such ‘resistance’ results in their accepting social expectations of them through a process of introspection, a finding that fits Durkheim’s (1925) definition of moral action.
