Abstract
The study was performed to determine if collegiate pitchers focused their strength and conditioning techniques on their core body or if they spent more time conditioning their pitching arm. This study also looked at the number of injuries that occurred to collegiate baseball pitchers. The participants in this study were Division I collegiate baseball pitchers for Conference USA and the Big Twelve. There were 74 male participants who completed an 8 page, 45 item questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of five sections which included: demographic, injuries, year round conditioning, strength/conditioning, spinal stabilization exercises, and functional training exercises. The study showed that there was no difference between the baseball pitchers who participated in either spinal stabilization exercises or functional training exercises in the number of shoulder and elbow injuries. The results showed there was a significant relationship between rotator cuff injuries and the total number of minutes spent on functional training exercises during the post and preseason. There is a great need for future research concerning shoulder and elbow injuries in the throwing athlete. More research is needed on how year round training and functional training could improve the speed of a pitch as well as decrease the number of shoulder and elbow injuries.
