Background. Individuals suffering from allergic disorders may be able to reduce symptoms by reducing their environmental exposures. Objective. (1) Determine use of allergen avoidance methods (AAM) in homes of children at risk for atopy and assess whether AAM are practiced to avoid symptoms, (2) determine if a clinician’s “diagnosis” of a disorder or a positive allergy skin prick test (SPT) had any impact on use of AAM. Methods. At two annual visits, beginning at age one, the children’s parents were interviewed regarding their child’s current allergic symptoms and use of AAM in the home. Results. Those who reported that their child had dermatitis or at least one symptom were more often using all four AAM than those who reported no symptoms (aOR 2.5, 95% CI 1.2 – 4.9) and (aOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.1 – 6.2), respectively. Conclusion. The findings from this study suggest that parents monitor their children for symptoms and respond by employing AAM. A clinician’s diagnosis of a disorder or a positive SPT was not effective in implementing AAM.
