THE SPIRIT OF COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION: JAPANESE KESAAT THE CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM

SPENCER, ELIZABETH

Abstract Details

2007, MA, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Art History.
The Japanese kesa is a garment that originated in Japan around the sixth century. It is made from scraps and worn by monks to show their devotion to Buddha and his simple lifestyle. The kesa of the Edo period (1600-1868) were more often made from rich, donated fabrics and appeared to be devoid of the initial humble qualities. I will discuss the history of this garment and the collection at the Cincinnati Art Museum to prove that even lavish kesa still conveyed the lessons of Buddha. This thesis also focuses on the spiritual aspects of this garment and its likeness to the mandala, a meditation tool of Esoteric Buddhism that depicts deities. This thesis contributes to existing scholarship on the kesa by revealing its religious significance throughout its existence in Japan.
