The latent structure of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) remains unclear in the literature due to a paucity of research. The current study sought to determine whether GAD is best conceptualized as a taxonic or dimensional structure by performing taxometric procedures on individuals’ scores measuring DSM-IV GAD criteria and the components of the tripartite model that are linked to the development of GAD. Data obtained from 763 undergraduate students was evaluated by two independent taxometric procedures, MAXCOV and MAMBAC. The results provide initial support for the dimensionality of the GAD construct in a nonclinical sample. Variable base-rate estimates were obtained across the study analyses and no taxometric curves evidenced clear taxonic peaks, rather they generally illustrated flat curves characteristic of a dimensional latent structure. Study findings suggest that GAD might be best described as a pathological extreme on a generalized anxiety continuum. Implications for scientific and clinical practice are discussed.
