Procedural Consistencies in Samuel Barber's Piano Music

Samuel Barber's piano works span a wide variety of genres, forms, and techniques. Certain compositional procedures occur in his piano works regardless of genre or form. This document examines Barber's approach to these procedures and finds a level of consistency throughout his piano oeuvre. It explores his use of ostinati, vernacular music, serialism, and the piano waltz. Each chapter discusses Barber's consistent treatment of these compositional procedures as they occur in works regardless of genre or form. A comparison between works, as well as set theory, twelve-tone analysis, and harmonic analysis support these findings.
