Women's Organizations in Post-conflict Redevelopment

Abstract Details

2008, MCP, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Community Planning.
The period immediately following armed conflict is characterized by failing economies and unstable political structures. Although a majority of the work in the field of post-conflict reconstruction focuses on governments and is carried out by national and international agencies with political and economic interests, successful redevelopment of societies is very much contingent on the inclusion of private grassroots organizations. During this time, women's organizations emerge as critical actors in the redevelopment process. It is these women that this research is focused on. Far from being only victims of war, women in affected societies are joining together in order to rebuild their communities. They are actively addressing the consequences of conflict through local, national and international leadership positions developing mechanisms to reach sustainable peace. This research is an investigation of the role of women in post-conflict reconstruction and the support they receive from the international community. Specific attention is given to the countries of El Salvador and Sierra Leone.
