Abstract
The relationship between impulsivity and social functioning in healthy adults is currently debated. Several studies have found an association between impulsivity and maladaptive social behaviors such as aggression and alcohol related problems. The current study evaluated the relationship between impulsivity and social functioning in a sample of healthy adults using two laboratory measures of impulsivity, two self-report measures of impulsivity and executive functioning, and a self-report measure of social functioning. A self-report measure of depression was also included based on previous findings indicating that a relationship exists between depression and both impulsivity and social functioning. Self-reported impulsivity and executive functioning both significantly predicted social functioning, while the laboratory measures of impulsivity did not. The depression measure was also found to contribute significant unique variance in social functioning. These findings indicate that a significant relationship exists between social functioning and impulsivity, executive functioning, and depression.
