This research study is an important first step in looking at the past mistakes made in creating retail and housing opportunities in Downtown Cincinnati. Retail is an important factor in attracting and retaining population in Downtown Cincinnati. This research provides information on the reasons for the lack of retail in downtown; how retail becomes an important factor in attracting and retaining population groups in downtown; and why downtown retail outlets are critical for those living downtown. Initially existing services (Retail, Food, Entertainment and Health & Fitness) and Housing were surveyed and mapped using Geographic Information Systems(GIS)in order to analyze the spatial relationship between them. This led to the identification of Two Focus Areas, Garfield Place and Court Street. These focus areas were studied in detailed and a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis was conducted. The key outcome of this thesis was a series of recommendations to sustain and invite more retail and housing development in Downtown Cincinnati.
