Abstract Details

2009, MA, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Art History.
This study is dedicated to discussing the socially-engaged practices in contemporary art through the example of the Website project, Learning To Love You More (hereafter LTLYM), which was founded by Harrell Fletcher and Miranda July. This project is pivotal as a leading example of the emergence of social practice strategies that have been recently defined in the art world. Although there are many artists now working with such approaches, and there are even MFA programs dedicated to its study, Fletcher and July are credited with bringing social practice to an international stage through instructional assignments, many of which are rooted in socially-engaged practices. This study examines the theoretical and artistic context of LTLYM's strategies and explains how this work offers a critique of capitalist art markets exemplifies socially-conscious work.
