Abstract Details

2010, DMA, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music : Conducting, Wind Emphasis.
The Moravian settlement in Salem, North Carolina contributed much to the musical life in America in the first one hundred years of nationhood. Music has always occupied an important position in the worship and life of the Moravian community, particularly wind and brass music. By the 1850s Salem’s brass band was a well-known performing ensemble and the outbreak of the Civil War found many of its members filling the ranks of regimental bands, most notably the 26th North Carolina Regiment Band. Today there exist first-hand accounts of the activities of the bands’ members and hundreds of compositions and arrangements collected in the remnants of seven volumes of part books preserved in the archives of the Moravian Music Foundation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This project proposes to study four selections from the archives in order to create modern editions for performance as well as scholarship in the areas of historical brass music, Civil War music, and the field of Moravian music studies. Also included is an appendix listing all known holdings of the archives of the 26th North Carolina Regiment Band.
