Abstract Details

2010, DMA, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music : Voice.
Serious, historical, traditional, philosophical, and/or religious tones, related to the country's intense history, usually come to mind when one thinks of Poland and its culture, but this does not take into account the light side of Polish style. In this document, the development of Polish light twentieth-century opera will be examined based on Adam Neuer's catalog of Polish twentieth-century works for the stage. Two works, Loteria na mezow (Lottery for husbands) (1909), by Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), and Przygoda Krola Artura (The Adventures of King Arthur) (1959), by Grazyna Bacewicz (1909-1969), will be used as examples to introduce the primary features and qualities of this genre. Subsequently, the text setting of Pan Marimba (Mr. Marimba) (1992-95), by Marta Ptaszynska (b. 1943), will be examined in relation to its integrated dialog style and its musical mood to illuminate the sources of this opera's popular Polish appeal. Mr. Marimba represents the culmination of the genre "ucieczka w fantazi opery" ("escape-fantasy opera") because it exhibits all of the features of this genre, it metaphorically reenacts Poland's history, and it calls for the renewal of national identity. The first chapter will cover Polish culture, Polish national character, and Polish style as it relates to ucieczka w fantazi opery (escape-fantasy opera). In the second chapter, the primary features and development of Polish light twentieth-century opera will be detailed, and an explanation of the title ucieczka w fantazi opery will be given. Lottery for husbands and The Adventures of King Arthur will be used as examples to introduce the qualities of this genre. The production of Mr. Marimba and the methodology for this opera's analysis will be introduced in chapter 3. In chapters 4 through 6, this children's opera will be analyzed in relation to dramatic contrasts in its text setting, illuminating the influences that contribute to its popular Polish appeal: (1) folk tradition, (2) values of the intelligentsia, and (3) modern Polish patriotism. The text setting will be analyzed, focusing on the techniques of integrated dialog style and musical mood. Mr. Marimba beckons the Polish nation to rediscover and refresh national identity, and to integrate defining traditional values with modern global concerns. More attention should be afforded ucieczki w fantazi oper by way of inclusion in discussions of opera history and mounting productions. The appendices will include the following: A and B) translations by Dr. Marek A. Stawiski and Eileen Stawiski of Lottery for Husbands and The Adventures of King Arthur; C) 45 pages of handwritten notes about the original copy of the orchestral score of Szymanowski's Lottery for Husbands (in the Music Library of the Polish Radio); D) a listing of data about Polish twentieth-century opera drawn from Adam Neuer's Polish Opera and Ballet of the Twentieth Century: Operas, Ballets, Pantomimes, Miscellaneous Works: An Illustrated Catalogue.
