The Feedback Loop: In Pursuit of ‘Living’ Design that Integrates Natural Environmental Cycles and Transformative Processes

Abstract Details

Buildings are built within a dynamic natural ecosystem where various feedback loops and cyclical processes maintain the equilibrium of the ecological system. Currently, the existing built environment does not actively participate in localized natural processes to an appropriate degree, which ultimately disrupts the equilibrium of the ecological system. By engaging with ‘negative’ feedback loops like the nutrient, solar and water cycle, the built environment begins to forge a mutually beneficial relationship with local ecosystems. Buildings can also participate in ‘positive’ feedback loops like evolution by applying transformative processes found in nature to reuse and potentially alter existing and historic infrastructure. To integrate these theories, I will be proposing a residential design for a retiring couple that actively participates in localized feedback loops within the northern Minnesota landscape over time.
