Abstract
The current educational model in the U.S. is in crisis; global standards, especially in public schools, have been falling since the 1970's, a problem most closely contributed to a lack of professional and real-world preparation for students. As described by educational theoretician Tony Wagner, our global achievement gap has been stemming from the culmination of outdated curricula, barriers to continued knowledge for teachers, an inability to integrate modern technologies, a loss of curiosity and engagement for students and the inadequacies of school building design based upon a past cultural time. Schools and districts across the nation have been attempting to incorporate new curricula, such as the STEM program, and advanced technologies into their existing programs and buildings but, thus far, most of these initiatives have been more aesthetic and additive, rather than integrated and systematic. This project will develop a method for a more interactive and associative learning opportunities, for both students and teachers, through the development of a three-part system consisting of a globally accessible, internet-based lesson database, which includes research material for a variety of subjects, in the form of books, video and games; an interactive ipad application to replace textbooks, organize research content and allow for virtual simulation of class experiments and a prefabricated architectural unit that allows students to test lessons concerning buildings and construction. These devices will seek to prepare students for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics related careers as well as to help them become aware of and understand the relationship that they have with buildings in their everyday lives.
