Abstract
The most prolific Portuguese choral composer of his generation, Eurico Carrapatoso was born on 15 February 1962. The development of Carrapatoso's music is unique in Portugal. A self-taught musician in the early stage of his education, Carrapatoso only started to compose in his late twenties. Yet his works became rapidly established within the compositional milieu. According to the New Grove Dictionary, his music is characterized by “stylistic multiplicity, whereby archaic modalism, chromatic tonality, and avant-garde techniques often confront each other within the same work.” The enthusiastic acceptance of his choral works by both professional and amateur choruses as well as by audiences, places him as the most performed Portuguese composer in his country and abroad. His choral music displays a wide variety of genres that include symphonic choral works, folk and sacred a cappella cycles, chorus with piano or small ensemble, and children’s choir music. This document will discuss a selection of eight choral works that are representative of his output. The following methods will be employed to construct the Conductor’s Guide to these works: formal score analysis and stylistic analysis of treatment of harmony, melody, texture and texts, and a thorough IPA manual to the Portuguese pronunciation. This Conductor’s Guide will become a necessary resource for conductors who approach the choral music of Eurico Carrapatoso, as no other guide exists.
