This thesis describes a novel approach for determining output feedback gains to achieve partial output tracking for a linear time-invariant discrete time system with non-zero instantaneous sensitivity of outputs to inputs. Such system dynamics typically occur when systems with relatively fast continuous time dynamics are discretized for computer-based control or when measurements are available of higher-order time derivatives like accelerations. The output feedback problem is structured to take advantage of existing state feedback algorithms available in mathematical software to determine the output feedback gains. The proposed approach is then applied to a two-input, two-output sample problem and to a two-input, four-output sample problem to demonstrate the implementation of the approach. The approach is then used to determine an output feedback controller for a linear turbofan engine model. After the controller has been designed using a linearized model of the dynamics, it is then applied to a simulation of the non-linear turbofan model. The linear output feedback controller is shown to achieve output tracking on the simulated non-linear turbofan engine model at three different flight conditions.
