Abstract
The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) provides information about the utilization of healthcare throughout the United States. It obtains data on admissions to community hospitals located in participating states. One of its databases includes the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) and this provides data on inpatient stays (discharges) in hospitals. Each year, the data consists of over seven million discharges and information on over two hundred variables. A random sample of about 20% of all discharges is taken every year. By utilizing the NIS data from 2005 to 2012, the hospital admissions due to Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is analyzed. Specifically, a trend analysis on hospital discharges and Diabetes discharges is carried out. Additionally, the demographic analysis (age, gender, ethnicity, and age*gender distributions) and cost analysis (total charges, length of stay or LOS, and insurance) are also conducted. Lastly, the gender distribution of the top 5 Diabetes conditions among DM discharges and the prevalence of DM from the CDC data is studied for the years of interest. Through this research, it is determined that there are over 500,000 discharges due to DM and the percentage of Diabetes Mellitus discharges is slightly higher among males than females. Additionally, it is also noted that there has been an increasing trend in the hospital charges due to DM and there has been a decreasing trend in the discharges due to DM between 2005 and 2011. Furthermore, it has been identified that the age group with the highest percentage of discharges due to DM (with complications) is the 45-64 age group among both males and females.
