Abstract
In this research, a computational tool set has been developed within a commercial CAD system for designers to evaluate a part and assess its manufacturability for Additive Manufacturing (AM). The following tools have been developed: generation of support structures, support contact area, sintering area and optimizing the build orientation in order to minimize these parameters for faster build time. To accomplish these tools, several algorithms have been developed. To start with, algorithms have been developed to generate support structures and their total volume based on a part face normal criteria. Next, the support contact area and optimization algorithm determines the area of support contact regions within the part and provides an option to determine the optimal orientation at which support contact area is minimized. Since part sintering/hatching area is proportional to the build time of the part, an algorithm has been developed to calculate the total sintering/hatching area for a given build orientation of the part. All these algorithms have been incorporated into a Siemens PLM NX CAD environment to allow the designer to evaluate the manufacturability of the part. An interface within Siemens PLM NX has been created that allows the designer to quickly access these algorithms/tools and evaluate the buildability of a design. Several case studies have been created to demonstrate the application of these algorithms. The results of these case studies demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of these algorithms within the CAD environment.
