Hoh, Zachary

Abstract Details

2016, MDES, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Design.
Interdisciplinary engagement affords design students opportunities to broaden design perspectives through the shared experience of collaboration. The purpose of this research study is to explore fashion design, industrial design and graphic communication design students’ attitudes and opinions related to interdisciplinary collaboration in order to formulate a context in which interdisciplinary collaboration contributes to the development of student design ability and creativity. This research explores constructivist theory as the framework from which the collaborative experience contributes to knowledge and design ability. Furthermore, the importance of interdisciplinary collaborative engagement is explored through the history of design education and within a narrative account of this researcher’s professional and academic experience. This mixed-method interpretive case study specifically explores junior-level interdisciplinary collaborative design studio courses at The University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning in the Fall 2015 semester. It is the goal of this research to explore the potential of interdisciplinary collaborative design education as a mode of knowledge generation that contributes to design ability and creativity.
