Curated Specificities: The Architecture of Narrative

Czmiel, Michael R

Abstract Details

2018, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
Though not admitted, much of the contemporary design process prioritizes function and economics at the expense of experiential quality and credibility. Salient as these factors may be, this thesis instead emphasizes how complex experiences and associations can be generated through the employment of `narrative architecture’ as a design process. A methodology invoking particular elements - systemics to analyze relations; linguistics to identify emergent qualities; semiotics and logic that realize design factors for a subsequent design concept - will be utilized to curate specificities that can become embedded with narrative in an architectural work for the purpose of creating a unified sense of content, place and design. This method becomes especially compelling when applied to institutional buildings (e.g. museums) which have embedded historical and political narratives of their own. As such, this research will be realized through the design of a museum that reimagines Chicago’s 2011 failed proposal to host a retired space shuttle orbiter within the city’s lakefront museum campus.
