Sustainable Healing: Rethinking Cancer Center Design

Abstract Details

2018, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
Healthcare facilities have been known to be large consumers of resources, therefore there has been a recent push to design them more sustainably. However, the patient, staff, and visitor experience has been forgotten. We must design healthcare facilities to incorporate sustainable principles that make the building less harmful to the environment by incorporating design guidelines that promote wellness ideas, not just building performance. Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard, and Evidence-Based Design will be used to create a new set of integrated guidelines that can be used to analyze existing healthcare facilities and inform the design of a new cancer center. The result of this thesis is to design a cancer treatment center that integrates sustainability, wellness, and evidence-based design to create a building that focuses around the occupants. This thesis provides new integrated guidelines that can be used to design buildings that are more sustainable, and occupant focused.
