Abstract Details

2018, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Physics.
MicroBooNE is a 170-ton liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) located in the Booster Neutrino Beamline at Fermilab. MicroBooNE’s primary objective is to investigate the low energy excess events observed by the MiniBooNE experiment. It will also measure a suite of low energy neutrino cross sections, investigate astro-particle physics along with providing valuable insights from LArTPC R&D. MicroBooNE has provided valuable input toward the construction of the future multi-kiloton detector DUNE and is the first detector in the short baseline neutron program. Since October 2015 MicroBooNE has been collecting both neutrino and cosmics data. This thesis will report on a new approach to reconstructing electromagnetic showers in LArTPC’s using a fully automated 3D reconstruction approach along with a measurement of neutral pions produced from cosmic neutron interactions. Cosmic data is used to validate MicroBooNE’s cosmic Monte Carlo which used CORSIKA. The neutron induced topology typically has low vertex activity and serves as a stepping stone for measuring the neutral current single 1 $\pi^{0}$ which is the dominant background for the neutrino oscillation analysis which will attempt to reconcile the MiniBooNE low energy excess.
