Recycled Aggregate & Robotic Contour Crafting

Abstract Details

2019, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
As society trends between urban and suburban living, the blight of vacant and neglected buildings becomes more visible. Certain neighborhoods drift between extreme vacancy and massive redevelopment efforts as new residents look towards older, more historically charismatic buildings. Unfortunately, this market interest brings with it wasteful development practices and hasty demolitions. Conversely, the practice of recycling reusable building materials such as brick and concrete is incredibly limited and rarely sought after by designers and contractors. This thesis proposes an alternative method of recycling and reuse by repurposing construction and demolition (C&D) materials as aggregate in concrete. It offers ways in which to incorporate such materials in innovative procedural design practices and emerging architectural technologies, such as contour crafting and robotic printing. These composite materials and form-driven procedures work together to develop more cyclical approaches to construction, thereby promoting more sustainable practices in architecture. The program, a maker space and build lab, facilitates the use of this technology, while showcasing the structures and architectural forms capable using such materials and processes.
