Abstract
Compared to the thousands of years of Chinese traditional furniture, the development of Chinese office furniture has a short history, The design of the office furniture has been influenced by the west and its priorities cater to a user’s physical needs. This influence has prevented the ability to include traditional Chinese furniture that carries forward not only the heritage but also the subtle emotional needs. The focus of this thesis is to bring back that heritage in the contemporary office by blending both functional needs of the office furniture with the emotional needs of the traditional form. The Ming-style chairs are studied from each of their components to their holistic composition theory based on the method of interpreting cultural artifacts (ICA). Furthermore, the target users working in a typical Chinese office environment were analyzed from the observation and interview by using interpreting cultural behavior (ICB). In the last section, the target user’s emotional needs are addressed through the analysis of their workstyle and representative behaviors. The corresponding design references drawing upon Ming-style furniture are found by linking the interpretations of both cultural artifacts and target user’s behaviors. And the design guidelines are put forward for designing modern Chinese-style office furniture.
