Abstract Details

2019, MS, University of Cincinnati, Medicine: Biostatistics (Environmental Health).
This thesis studies the trends of e-cigarette smoking amongst the U.S youth population by using the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data from the Center of Disease and Control and Prevention. The first chapter of this thesis will go over the data to investigate traditional smoking rates and e-cigarette smoking rates from 2015 to 2018. We will discuss changes and breakdown these groups based on age and gender. E-cigarette companies assert that their products help in cessation from cigarette smoking. We will review the validity of their statement as this pertains to a very important part of public health. The second chapter of this thesis will center on the emergence of an exclusive e-cigarette smoking group. These youths do not smoke traditional cigarettes, but only smoke e-cigarettes. We will first review best definitions to define what an e-cigarette smoker is due to no general consensus on the matter has been resolved. We will delve into the characteristics of this exclusive group and study their trends based on age and gender. We will discuss public health concerns related to the change in this emerging group of smokers. This thesis studies the public health issue of the increase in e-cigarette smoking amongst the U.S youth population and will give evidence to communities, schools, and policymakers to be the extent of their use.
