Synergistic Ethos: A Hybrid Approach to Designing Process Improvement for Healthcare Providers

Abstract Details

The healthcare environment has many opportunities for integration of the methodology and process used by design professionals. A deeper incorporation of individuals from both fields offers an especially compelling space for synergy and mutual growth. Healthcare providers are trained to use information about the art and science of medical practice and the experiences accumulated in practice over time. Design professionals are trained to obtain and integrate information through an agile set of analytical tools capable of identifying opportunities where change can occur elegantly and sustainably. The cognitive framework of healthcare and design professionals is paradoxical. In the study, we explore process improvement. The healthcare system is complex, vast and fundamentally data driven today. The methodology employed by healthcare providers is generally successful in patient care itself. However, patient satisfaction and a maximally advanced yet achievable patient experience also requires attention to the system itself; a system which is unpredictable, extensive and continuously changing. Healthcare providers determine the patient experience. Healthcare providers today must face a myriad of challenges within the practice of medicine. As the patient experience is most influenced by each provider team, we focused on empowering providers through integration of the design methodology and process. We collaborated with nurses and staff from a 28 bed medical/surgical unit at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in need of support after assembling a team of administrative, management and clinical staff. Using design methods to empower the nursing staff, significant improvement in patient experience feedback was demonstrated through increased performance scores during a period of 12 months. Our study also achieved relevant success with two additional projects over a period of 18 months.
