Abstract Details

Providing care for a loved one living with dementia has been reported to be one of the most stressful undertakings a caregiver can face. Keeping a loved one living with dementia engaged and active throughout the day is a common care responsibility and challenge for the majority of family caregivers. A process to assess the capabilities, limitations, and life history of an adult living with dementia was created in the form of an analogue guidebook. The guidebook was then sent out to family caregivers as well as professional caregivers (PCG) for evaluation of content, flow of information, usability, format, and overall value. An analysis of the responses from the participants was conducted to identify what should be in the next iteration and which processes need to be refined. The guidebook’s process helped family caregivers understand where their loved one fell within the stages of dementia, assess their loved ones’ needs and capabilities, and refine their ideas for activities to match the needs of their loved one. It also helped some of the family caregivers begin to think on a more holistic level when planning and providing care. Professional caregivers believed the guidebook would help them understand their residents on a more personal level and personalize their care routines. Each type of professional caregiver, from activity director to professional aide, saw themselves utilizing the guidebook in different ways that could enhance the care they provide to their residents. The next iteration will include changes suggested by the participants and will be developed both digitally as well as in analogue format. Overall, this guidebook has shown substantial promise for providing family caregivers with tools to navigate their care journey and create an ecosystem of care that is holistic, personalized, and beneficial for their loved one with dementia.
