Effects of COVID-19 Lockdown on Urban Water Demand in Cincinnati

Feltman, Lauren E

Abstract Details

2021, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering and Applied Science: Environmental Science.
During the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shift in the daily lives of individuals everywhere. By March 2020 mandatory stay at home orders were implemented across the United States and many other countries. More people were working and completing school from home, and non- essential businesses were forced to close. Due to this, it was predicted that at residential sites in the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio area, there would an increase in daily and weekly water demands during the COVID-19 lockdown period compared to the residential daily and weekly water demands seen during the pre- lockdown period. In addition to this prediction, it was expected to see a decrease in daily and weekly water demands at non-residential sites during the lockdown period comparing to the pre-lockdown period. There was also expected to be a shift in the median daily water consumption times when comparing the pre-lockdown and lockdown periods. This study completed hypothesis testing using daily and weekly water demand data, along with the Mann-Whitney U test using weekly water demand data at both residential and non-residential sites within the Greater Cincinnati area. It was found that when comparing the weekly water demands from before and during the COVID-19 lockdown, 60% of the non- residential sites have higher water uses during the pre-lockdown period. For residential sites, 57% show an increase in weekly water use during the lockdown period. The Mann-Whitney U test reveals that four of seven residential sites have a significant difference between the time of day that 50% of total daily water use is reached during the pre-lockdown period compared to the lockdown period. No significant differences in median daily water consumption times during pre-lockdown and lockdown were found at the non-residential sites in this analysis.
