Echo Curricula: LGBTQ People's Accounts of Sex Education in Christian and Catholic High Schools in Ohio

Prior scholarship has found that lesbian, gay, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students have been uniquely excluded and marginalized in traditional sex education curriculum in public schools. However, little scholarly attention has been given to students’ sex education experiences in private religious schools. A majority of religiously affiliated schools are predominantly Catholic or Christian, which tend to rely on doctrine unsupportive sexual and gender minorities. Drawing on interviews with sixteen LGBTQ persons who attended private, religiously affiliated high schools, I examine how participants understand messages related to sex and sexuality within these institutions. Participants describe receiving formal sex education across multiple subjects as well as receiving implicit or ‘hidden’ curricula within the school. I develop the concept of echo curriculum to describe the dynamic interaction between formal and hidden lessons on sex education that students receive. I further explain how these echoes culminate into an abstinence-only, LGBTQ-excluding narrative that has negative effects on students’ social and emotional well-being.
