The healthcare industry is one of the biggest industries in the USA. Behind the seemingly haphazard and essentially random exterior, there is scope for organization and system analysis using formal methods of mathematical modeling, doing which meaningful and useful results can be obtained. This is made possible by the discrete and small number of groups that the illnesses of patients fall into, and the uniformity in the flow of patients of the same groups as they traverse the system. This study describes the application of yield management techniques and integer programming to find the optimum patient mix and patient schedules in a healthcare unit. The unit is treated as a shop floor that "makes" patients. An integer-programming problem is formulated and is solved using CPLEX and SAS solvers. A greedy heuristic is developed to find the optimum patient schedules and is implemented by coding the heuristic in C++. The proposed research is conducted and developed at a hospital in Cincinnati.
