COLUMN LEACHING TESTS TO STUDY MOBILIZATION OF RADIONUCLIDES IN LINER SYSTEM OF ON-SITE DISPOSAL FACILITY AT FERNALD SITE

Abstract Details

2001, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering : Civil Engineering.
Controlling radioactive wastes from contaminating the subsurface environment has become a major concern with the development of technology in utilizing nuclear energy. Currently only a limited number of techniques are applied in practice and they are either expensive or unsafe. Nash et al. (1995) suggested using phytic acid to reduce the mobilization and leachability of radionuclides in contaminated soils and studied this technology in the geochemical process. However, no laboratory test has been developed to demonstrate the utilization of phosphate mineralization. In this study, column-leaching tests were used to study the possibility limiting the mobilization of radionuclides in contaminated soil with the application of phytic acid. The study is based on the On-Site Disposal Facility (OSDF) now being constructed at Fernald. The construction requirements of the OSDF are introduced as engineering background. The test procedure is presented in detail for easy reference and reproducibility. The column samples were constructed to duplicate the construction of the OSDF liner system and contaminated soil layer. These column samples were then leached with perched groundwater or simulated rainwater for their permeability and radionuclide concentration in leachates and post-test column materials. The permeability test results confirm that the permeability of the OSDF liner system can be achieved within an acceptable range. The radionuclide concentration analysis based on leachates shows significant reduction of the uranium concentration when phytic acid is applied to treat contaminated soils and leachant is perched groundwater. The radionuclide analysis based on the contaminated soil layer in column samples shows consistent results.
