Break out and breakthroughs: Institutional Deviations from the Writing Center Grand Narrative

This thesis was based on the work of the Wittenberg Writing Center. The Center is a resource for a students at a variety of levels; it is not remedial. This thesis examines the differences between the writing center grand narrative and individual divergences that are present in different institutions’ writing centers. This research has been conducted in order to understand differences between writing centers more clearly, as well as the reasons for these variations. To examine more closely the ways that writing centers have diversified based on institutional needs, four colleges were used for this study: Purdue University, Wright State University, Wittenberg University, and Wabash College. Each writing center does their work in different ways, creating identities that are unique to the institutions the writing centers serve. The writing centers in this study would not be as successful without their divergence from other centers in collective identity, physical space, and individual identity.
