Public elementary school teachers' implicit theories of intelligence and perceptions of giftedness

Previous research regarding individuals' attitudes toward giftedness has failed to identify meaningful predictors of attitudes. Implicit theories of intelligence (ITI) are the specific belief structures that individuals use to explain and understand intelligence and may provide useful information about attitudes toward related constructs such as giftedness. ITI were used to predict elementary school teachers' attitudes toward giftedness. Results indicated that ITI accounted for attitudes toward giftedness after controlling for other known predictors. However, the percentage of variance in attitudes that ITI explained was modest (4%), indicating that other, more meaningful predictors remain to be identified. Examination of the teachers' ITI and attitudes about giftedness scores revealed that incremental ITI were overrepresented among the sample (51%) and overall attitudes towards giftedness were overwhelmingly positive. As a whole, the findings suggest that ITI add incrementally to our understanding of teachers' beliefs about the nature of intelligence and giftedness.Suggestions of areas for future research are also discussed.
