The Effect of Pet-Friendly Policies on Organizational Attractiveness

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts (M.A.), Xavier University, Psychology.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect a pet-friendly policy had on a company’s scores of organizational attractiveness, as pet-friendly policies have become an anecdotally welcomed addition to the workplace. Participants (n =135) from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) viewed a company description either with a pet-friendly policy or without one. Contrary to the first hypothesis, there was no difference in average attractiveness scores between a company with a pet-friendly policy and one without a policy. However, exploratory analyses revealed the pet-friendly policy generated more extreme positive and negative reactions regarding its attractiveness than the control group. In support of the second hypothesis, a person’s general attitude toward pets moderated the effect a pet-friendly policy had on organizational attractiveness, such that people with more positive feelings toward pets viewed the organization as more attractive. Surprisingly, there was still a weak, positive correlation between a person’s attitude toward pets and organizational attractiveness scores in absence of a pet policy. These findings suggest that companies should exercise caution before implementing a pet-friendly policy, considering the desired person-environment fit of the organization and their ability to be selective with candidates. Future research could further investigate the implications of pet-friendly policies by examining specific types of policies in the field, rather than an experimental setting.
