Abstract
Trauma survivors are at an increased risk of experiencing shame, as survivors can blame themselves for the traumatic event happening (McName, 2015). Experiencing negative symptoms such as shame after a traumatic event is likely, but other symptoms may not reach full diagnostic criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD; Platt & Freyd, 2015). Many psychological treatments are directed towards those who meet DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for PTSD, often neglecting the other individuals who experience symptoms but are within a subthreshold range for the disorder. This study aimed to address this gap in the literature by utilizing a randomized controlled trial to examine an abbreviated Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993) individual skills training intervention targeting shame in college students who have experienced a traumatic event. The targeted outcomes included participants’ levels of shame and the distress experienced related to a traumatic event. Participants engaged in two 2- hour individual skills training sessions in which they either were taught eight standard DBT skills or completed a series of brain puzzles and other activities on the computer. Results indicated that individuals in the DBT group had greater reduction in distress related to the reported traumatic experience when compared to the control group but did not significantly differ in regards to reduction in the experience of shame. This study supports the use of a brief DBT skills training treatment for college students who experience distress related to a traumatic event. Other treatment considerations, study limitations and future directions are discussed.
